I walk through Times Square almost every day, and one thing that's missing from all of these video game depictions are the mobs of people and insane traffic! I'm sure in most? cases it can be explained via game logic, but still...

I think it's a lot ...
I think it's a lot more akin to movies - it's a lot different than how you state it, actually. It's not that in the mid 2000's all teens and young adults were talking about them, it's that nowadays they're? as usual as films used to be 50 years ago. There's more game players than there have ever been, even if most play casual games on portable devices like the Android or Iphone. Video games aren't dying. Sure they aren't flourishing either, but they're not dying by any means.
